Fold
Fold is the memory store behind every search by meaning in Player One. It is an experimental form of proto-holographic memory: it extends ordinary semantic search so that any fragment reconstructs the context around it. When an agent asks "what did we agree about late payers" and finds your note about chasing invoices, Fold found it, and brought the connected material with it. It is a separate system that Player One runs beside itself, with its own version number among the component versions on Admin > Runtime (/admin/gateway).
Semantic search finds fragments. Proto-holographic recall reconstructs context: any fragment pulls in the decisions, files and history connected to it, weighted by what you actually use. Like a hologram, a fragment reaches the whole; unlike one, it does not contain the whole, which is the proto.
What it does for you
Finds by meaning, not by wording. Ask in your own words and the right note surfaces even when it says something quite different: "the supplier who was late in March" finds the note about the missed delivery.
Brings the connected material with it. Every note and file Fold holds is linked to the others it belongs with: the same subject, the same file, the same piece of work. A search returns the note you asked for and the neighbourhood around it, so an agent sees the decision, what it touched and what came of it, rather than one sentence out of context.
Keeps what you use strong. Memories that keep being recalled stay near the top. Memories nobody has needed for months fade towards the background, but never disappear: an old fact is still there the day it is needed again. This is modelled on how human recall works, and it is why a year of notes stays usable instead of drowning the recent ones.
Holds whole documents and code. A price list, a contract or a source file is kept intact and searchable as sections, with a summary of each section and of the whole, so a question lands on the right passage.
Answers from a whole codebase in seconds. Ask a coding agent how to add a feature to a large system and, with the code indexed in Fold, it answers with the exact files and lines in one search, instead of reading its way through the tree for half an hour.
Searches everything at once. One question can run across several Memory Spaces, a workspace of files and your chat history together. Your agents do this before they answer anything that depends on your history.
Where you see it
- A Memory Space's Fold tab (
/manage/memories/<slug>/fold): whether the Space is indexed, what is in it, any file it saw but skipped and why, what indexing has cost, and a search of that one Space. - A workspace's Knowledge tab (
/workspaces/<workspaceId>?tab=knowledge): the switch that makes a folder of files searchable by meaning. - Admin > Fold (
/admin/fold): every index in one list, with health, counts, cost, and controls to pause, resume or re-index.
Setting it up is agent-first: say "make this folder searchable" or "index the contracts space" and your assistant does it. The pages are where you check the result.
What it costs
Indexing reads your material through your own AI account, once, to summarise and embed it, and again when something changes. That is a modest one-off cost per document rather than a running one. Index changes on a Space's Fold tab picks up only what changed; a full re-index reprocesses everything and asks you to confirm first because it repeats that cost. Tokens, cost and caching covers the money.
What it is not
Fold stores and recalls. It does not decide what a note means or where it belongs: that is Engram, the curator that tidies a Memory Space while you are not working. The two work together, and Memory, explained tells the whole story.
Indexing something of your own
Say "index the shop's code repository and connect it to this project".
Anything indexed on your installation's Fold, a repository, a folder of documents, an export, becomes a search source your agents can use once it is connected to a project. Your assistant indexes it, syncs the list of sources, and connects it; from then on a search in that project reads it alongside your memory. The Knowledge tab of Manage > Project (/project) shows what is connected and what could be, and is also where a Fold on another server is added.
